2 Baruch envisages an eschatological resurrection of the righteous (30.2) but apparently only judgment for the wicked: ‘the souls of the wicked, when they behold all these things, shall then waste away the more. For they shall know that their torment has come and their perdition has arrived’ (30.4–5, OTP). While such future torment appears frequently (44.12; 51.2; 52.3; 59.2; 83.8; cf. 46.6), in some places it seems almost synonymous with judgment itself (cf. 54.14–15; 55.2, 7) rather than a distinct aspect of such judgment. In two instances, however, torment is associated with ‘fire’ or ‘fire which is reserved for them’ (i.e. the wicked; 44.15; 59.2, OTP). Such eschatological fire is closely associated with Gehenna (59.10; 85.13), but it is unclear whether it continues to torment (cf. 64.7–10) or simply destroys (48.39, 43; 85.15; cf. 82.6). One intriguing passage, however, suggests that the shape of the wicked will be hideously changed, causing them to ‘waste away even more’ and ‘go away to be tormented’ (51.6, OTPAB).34
